The film would give De Wilde a place in film history, even though a good bit of people aren’t aware of the other roles the young boy gave.ĭe Wilde also ventured in television and even had a short lived series “Jamie” from 1953-1954 where he plays an orphan who becomes close-knit with Ernest Truex’s Grandpa character.

De Wilde gave his tour de force in the final tearjerking scene when Ladd’s Shane has to go away from Joey’s life and as he rides away, Joey continues to call his name, begging him to come back. He played the young boy Joey Starrett, who meets a mysterious traveler, played by Alan Ladd, and begins looking up to the man.
De Wilde’s next film would also be his best known one, Shane (1953). The film was well-received and it opened Brandon up to a career in films by the time he turned ten.ĭe Wilde continued a career on the stage, but the screen was accepting him with open arms as well. De Wilde plays John Henry, a young neighborhood boy who befriends the tomboy Julie Harris (reprising her role as well). The filmization of the play would become Brandon’s film debut. At the young age of seven, De Wilde made his stage debut in the acclaimed play “The Member of the Wedding” where he received a lot of critical praise. His father was a stage manager and his mother was an actress, which introduced Brandon to a world of acting as a child. De Wilde was born into a show business family. De Wilde, however, could have been bigger, but was suddenly whisked away from the world due to an unfortunate accident. He was in a good chunk of critically acclaimed movies and performed in some excellent roles and even got to say an immortal line in film history. Paul Newman was so repellantly brilliant as an unregenerate heel that his Oscar nomination for Hud was a foregone conclusion. Finally, Hud steps over the line by attempting to rape Alma (Patricia Neal), the earthy but warm-hearted housekeeper. But Homer orders the cattle destroyed (the film's most harrowing sequence), driving an even deeper wedge between himself and Hud. When hoof-and-mouth disease shows up in one of the elder Bannon's cows, Hud is all for selling the herd before the government inspectors find out. Hud is an amoral, cold-hearted creature his father, who holds Hud responsible for the death of his other son, tries to imbue Lon with a sense of decency and responsibility to others, but Lon is devoted to Hud and isn't inclined to listen. Hud Bannon (Newman) is a young Texas rancher who lives with his cattleman father Homer (Melvyn Douglas) and his hero-worshipping nephew Lon (Brandon DeWilde).
